On July 22, 2026, OpenAI opened "Advertise in ChatGPT," a self-serve Ads Manager that lets businesses run paid ads inside ChatGPT conversations. Days later, Plai — the ad platform we run our own campaigns through — added ChatGPT Ads as a launch platform in its dashboard, sitting alongside Meta, Google, TikTok, LinkedIn, Spotify, Bing, and Snapchat. We checked it ourselves. It's real, it's live, and here's exactly what we can and can't confirm about it.
What OpenAI Actually Launched
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT for Free and Go tier users back in February 2026 — simple sponsored product cards appearing below a response when it was relevant to the conversation. On July 22, 2026, that expanded into a full self-serve advertising product: a proper Ads Manager where any business can create a campaign, set a budget and goal, upload or build ad creative, and launch and monitor performance, following the same basic workflow as Google Ads or Meta Ads. Best Buy, Lowe's, and VistaPrint were named as early advertisers.
A few specifics worth knowing before you consider it:
- Who sees the ads: Only Free and Go tier ChatGPT users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts are ad-free, and no ads are shown to anyone who states or is predicted to be under 18.
- Where it's live: Launch markets are Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the UK, and the US — not a global rollout yet.
- How targeting works: Ads are matched to what's being discussed in the current chat thread — OpenAI calls this "context signals" rather than keyword targeting. If personalization is on, past chats and memory can also factor in.
- What OpenAI promises stays separate: Ads don't influence ChatGPT's actual answers, they're run on separate systems, they're clearly labeled as sponsored, and advertisers never see users' chats or personal data — only aggregated performance metrics like views and clicks.
What We Confirmed Inside Plai
We logged into our own Plai-powered ad dashboard and found a ChatGPT Ads tile on the campaign launch screen, styled and positioned exactly like the platform's other ad channels — Meta, Google, TikTok, LinkedIn, Spotify, Bing, Snapchat. Like most of those, it requires connecting an ad account before you can launch anything through it, which tracks with OpenAI's Ads Manager being a distinct, separately-authenticated product.
That's the part we can verify firsthand. What we can't confirm yet, because it requires an actual connected OpenAI Ads Manager account to see: exactly which ad formats Plai supports for ChatGPT campaigns, how Plai's AI creative and targeting tools adapt to this specific platform, or what campaign objectives are available. Plai's own public feature list at plai.io/features hasn't been updated to include ChatGPT Ads yet either — this looks like a feature that shipped inside the live product ahead of the marketing site catching up, which happens with fast-moving platforms.
Should You Try It?
If you're already advertising on other channels and running some budget through Free-tier ChatGPT users' path to purchase, this is worth a small test — the same way most advertisers treat any brand-new ad platform in its first weeks. A few honest caveats: OpenAI's own case studies don't publish specific ROI numbers yet, and early public feedback from advertisers running campaigns has described costs as high relative to return during the first couple of weeks, which is fairly normal while auction dynamics and targeting are still maturing. Treat it as an early test budget, not a channel you lean on immediately.
The practical upside of it living inside Plai: if you're already managing Meta, Google, or TikTok campaigns there, adding a ChatGPT Ads test doesn't mean learning a new platform from scratch or juggling another login — once you connect the account, it sits in the same dashboard as everything else.
Where this fits with what we recommend
We're not going to pretend we have performance data on ChatGPT Ads yet — nobody outside OpenAI's earliest advertisers does. What we can say is that Plai added support for it fast, which is consistent with how it's handled new platforms before (Spotify, Snapchat, and Bing all followed a similar pattern of shipping inside the product before getting full marketing-site treatment). If you're curious, it costs nothing extra to connect the platform inside an existing Plai account and run a small test.
Facts about OpenAI's ad platform in this piece are sourced from OpenAI's own help center and product announcements as of July 22–26, 2026, and from our own login to a live Plai-powered ad account. Ad platform features, availability, and rollout markets change quickly — verify current details at ads.openai.com and plai.io before running a campaign.
